Remote Flash Control with the 580 EX II
You can use the Canon 580EX II to manually adjust power levels on remote Speedlites mounted on PocketWizard FlexTT5 Tranceivers to precisely control exposure.
Here's how to get started:
Set the camera’s exposure mode to “M” Manual. Set your shutter speed and aperture appropriately.
With the camera-mounted MiniTT1 or FlexTT5 turned OFF, slide a 580EX II into the PocketWizard’s dedicated hot shoe and lock it in place.
Enable manual mode for the on-camera flash: Press MODE to set “M” - Manual mode. 1/1 will appear to indicate the power level.
Now enable MASTER mode for the on-camera flash: Press and hold the ZOOM button on the 580EX II until the wireless icon and “OFF” appear.
Turn SELECT dial to see blinking “MASTER + ON”
Press the SELECT button in the center of the SELECT DIAL to lock in the settings. Switch the camera-mounted MiniTT1 or FlexTT5 to C1 or C2.
Slide a compatible Canon Speedlite into the dedicated shoe of a FlexTT5 Transceiver, lock it onto the shoe and switch the flash and the FlexTT5 ON.
Do not set the remote flash to SLAVE mode, Manual mode, or worry about matching the Canon channel. The FlexTT5 handles all of that for you. Just leave the remote flash in basic E-TTL mode.
Set the FlexTT5 Zone Selector to “A.”
For one off-camera flash:
Adjust the power level of the remote flash and the on-camera flash together by pressing the SELECT button and turning the Select dial of the on-camera MiniTT1 or FlexTT5. Press the SELECT button again to lock in the setting.
For two remote flashes in ratio:
Slide a compatible Canon Speedlite into the dedicated shoes of two receiving FlexTT5 Transceivers. Lock them onto the shoes and switch both units ON.
Set one of the FlexTT5 Zone Selector switches to “A” and the other to “B.”
Do not set the remote flashes to SLAVE mode, Manual mode, or worry about matching the Canon channel. The FlexTT5 handles all of that for you. Just leave the remote flashes in basic E-TTL mode.
Press the ZOOM button on the on-camera flash TWICE to see RATIO + OFF blink.
Turn the SELECT dial to see ON + RATIO + A:B
Press the SELECT button to lock in the setting.
Adjusting power levels of remote flashes:
Turn the SELECT dial to select Zone A or Zone B. Press the SELECT button to adjust the power level for the Zone A or Zone B flash unit. Turn the SELECT dial to adjust the power level for each Zone. Press the SELECT button to lock in the setting and select the second flash. In this scenario, the on-camera flash is part of Zone A. If you do not wish to have the on-camera flash contribute light to the scene, then see Step 05 in the Wireless Ratios with Remote Flash for instructions about turning it off.
You can have as many remote flashes on the same Zone as you wish, each mounted on a FlexTT5.
